Approach to CSR

Nigeria LNG's approach to corporate social responsibility is anchored on sustainability, stakeholding and partnership.

As part of its CSR activities, the company, through the Community Relations and Development Department, provides support to its host communities. Specifically, NLNG supports the improvement of infrastructure, health and educational facilities and encourages local enterprise, facilitating know-how and building capacity in the sustainable use of resources in its host communities.

Championing best practices in community relations, the company introduced a new strategy called Community Driven Development Strategy . This is a strategic approach by NLNG and its Joint Industry Companies (JIC) partners to move from the extant practice of company driven community development to community driven development and sustainability. With this strategy, the community generates their development needs, work out its implementation - secure partnerships where necessary, generate funds and physically oversee their own development projects. The community will own and manage key community development initiatives whilst the JIC partners only contribute funds for developmental activities to the community. Pilot implementation of the strategy is being carried out in Bonny.

In addition to this, engagement specialists are assigned to specific settlements as Engagement Officers to build and maintain positive relationships with the communities, covering Bonny, Finima, Rumuji, Ubeta, and the pipeline communities.  Others work as Development Officers specialising in key areas such as health, education, economic empowerment and youth development.  The company operates an open door policy. Officers meet regularly with representatives of the host communities, formally and informally, to maintain good relationships and enhance mutual advancement.
